History of Debenhams

Debenhams began as Clark & Debenham, selling fabrics, parasols and bonnets in 19th century West London, later becoming Debenham & Freebody and diversifying into wholesale cloth, then expanding overseas in South Africa, China, Australia and Canada.

In 1927 the Debenham family ended its involvement and it became a public company. By 1950 it had become the largest department store group in Britain.

Between 1985 and 1998, Debenhams was part of the Burton Group. Designers at Debenham was launched and the number of stores increased. The first international franchise opened in Bahrain in 1997.

It was then de-merged from the Burton Group and listed on the London Stock Exchange until acquired by Baroness Retail Ltd. In May 2006 Debenhams returned to the London Stock Exchange.

2007 saw the acquisition of nine stores from Roches in the Republic of Ireland and 2009 the acquisition of Magasin du Nord, a market leader in Denmark.

Debenhams has 240 stores in 28 countries. Its online store is available in 70 countries and ranks 11th out of all UK online retailers by volume of traffic.

Delivery Information

Standard delivery costs £3.99, and is free on orders over £30 and for Debenhams Gold cardholders, for whom the delivery charge is deducted automatically at checkout.

Deliveries arrive between 8am-6pm within 4 working days, Monday-Saturday.

Next day delivery is available to most postcodes for £4.99 on orders placed by 7pm on a weekday, or before 6pm on weekends. Deliveries arrive between 8am-6pm, Monday-Sunday.

Next evening delivery is available to most postcodes for £6.99 on orders placed by 10pm. Deliveries arrive between 6pm-10pm, Mon-Sun.

Choose a day for delivery to most postcodes for £4.99, or choose an evening delivery for £6.99.

Click & Collect allows customers to collect their purchases from a store for free from 12pm the next day for orders placed before 7pm. Customers must bring a copy of the confirmation email (either printed or on a phone) and a bank card with the purchaser's name on it, or an alternative form of photo ID. Another person collecting items on the purchaser's behalf must also bring the confirmation email and the purchaser's ID. Collection must be made within 14 days, after which the item(s) will be returned to the warehouse and a refund issued within 15 days. Furniture delivery is £3.99 or free on orders over £30. Quick Delivery items are delivered within 4-7 working days. Delivery times for Made to Order items vary, and information is available on the item webpage. International delivery is available to 66 countries worldwide. Delivery costs vary between £7.00-£15.00 and free on orders over £50. International orders are delivered between 5-14 working days of the order being placed.

Returns Policy

Debenhams provides an exchange or refund on any purchase within 28 days of delivery, to the card originally used for payment, or the gift card used.

Unwanted goods must be in a fully resaleable condition, tags still intact. Debenhams may refuse to issue a refund on damaged items.

To return a purchase made online, customers can take the item to a Debenhams store, Parcelshop or post it via Royal Mail. There is also a free courier collection for UK addresses service, arranged by calling the number found on the parcel, or by booking on the Debenhams website. The 16-digit barcode on the package label must be provided and a refund is issued within 15 days.

Purchases made in a Debenhams store can only be returned to a store.

To return furniture, Debenhams must be informed within 7 days of delivery and the goods must be in the same condition as when delivered. A £75 charge will be made for most items.

For some items including outdoor furniture, barbecues, bean bags, headboards and bed frames, office chairs and desks, rugs, lighting, TV and hi-fi stands, dining and bedroom mirrors, the cost is £25.

Debenhams uses 'secure socket layer' (SSL) technology to encrypt card details to protect payments. It also employs popular security measures Verified by Visa and MasterCard, and Secure Code (MSC), known as 3D Secure. This is latest fraud prevention software, which ensures no sensitive information is actually captured or stored on debenhams.com systems.
