The company was originally based in Abington, Massachusetts. Swartz introduced innovative injection molding technology, which was groundbreaking in the footwear industry and led to the birth of the waterproof boots for which Timberland is renowned. In 1973, the brand name "Timberland" was introduced, and the company changed its name to The Timberland Company in 1978.
